Praise for Lucia Keskin’s BBC Three sitcom

Lucia Keskin’s BBC Three sitcom Things You Should Have Done has been named best comedy at the Broadcast Digital Awards, with Rosie Jones fronted panel show Out Of Order winning a ‘gamechanger’ award.

In its citation for Things You Should Have Done, Broadcast praises the show’s blend of  ‘traditional high gag comedy with Gen-Z-inspired humour resulting in a refreshing and unique family sitcom.’

Former social media star Keskin was commissioned to write the pilot when she was just 19 – proof, said one judge, that ‘talent can be successfully brought from social to the big screen’.

The show follows the life of the clueless Chi, played by Reskin, as she tries to stand on her own two feet after her parent’s sudden deaths.

Broadcast’s citation added: ‘Despite her youth, Keskin’s writing is self-confident, playful and rich. She is described by the judges as a “fantastic new talent” and “exactly what this industry needs”.

‘The playful, deadpan comedy is pitched to deliver belly laughs, yet Keskin deals with sensitive topics, such as Karen’s ongoing fertility issues, with a care and sensitivity far beyond her years.

‘Things You Should Have Done champions diversity both on and off screen, and aims to portray working-class families in a more playful and innovative way than is usually seen on screen. As one judge commented, it is “effortlessly diverse without trying hard and being clunky”.’

Meanwhile, Comedy Central’s Out Of Order was praised as ‘a great show that proves comedy and celebrating diversity go hand-in-hand’.

Also featuring team captains Katherine Ryan and Judi Love, the show attracts attracts an audience that is 93 per cent female and 22 per cent disable, the judges noticed.

The citation said: ‘Championing themes about identity in a unique format that requires its guests to judge a book by its cover might seem like a difficult task – but the show deals with the undertones of these complex issues in a way that remains light-hearted and empowering for everyone involved.’

Also at last night’s ceremony, Rob And Romesh Vs was named best entertainment programme,

Broadcast said: ‘Our judges were impressed by Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan’s dynamic, with one judge describing them as the “perfect partnership who were on the right line of mischief, but still welcoming and warm”.’

Another  judge described the Sky show as having ‘massive scale and ambition and a brilliant duo at the heart of it’, adding it was ‘laugh out loud throughout’.
