Most celebrities may hit the red carpet in tuxedos, glamorous gowns or a plush swan if you’re Bjork circa 2001, but Danny DeVito is neither most celebrities, nor Iceland’s queen of avant-garde pop.
Last Tuesday, the comedy legend attended It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s 20th-anniversary celebration in Los Angeles wearing an outfit fit for Paddy’s Pub’s resident trash man: pairing a black suit jacket, a “Route 66” printed Hawaiian shirt and French navy slacks with a pair of what appears to be moss green Crocs.
DeVito is no stranger to the famously comfortable footwear, even sporting what seemed to be a spiked pair for the show’s Season 10 promo shoot. Nonetheless, his plastic kicks set social media ablaze, even days after the event.
Don’t Miss
“Can’t stop thinking about… them,” Always Sunny’s official Instagram account captioned a video slowly zooming in on DeVito’s Crocs. The account’s overlords, however, weren’t the only ones with the iconic actor’s slides on the brain.
“No one’s telling Danny Devito he can’t wear Crocs on the red carpet,” wrote one fan, while another speculated how he ended up hitting the red carpet in that exact getup. “He was nervous about the red carpet and flushed his dress shoes,” they joked, referencing Frank Reynolds’ anxious tick in Season 10’s “Charlie Work.”
DeVito’s shoes, however, weren’t the only reason why the actor made headlines at the event. During the Q&A session, DeVito interrupted his co-star Rob Mac — the artist formerly known as Rob McElhenney — as he discussed his decision to slash three syllables from his surname, unsure of whether the change was real or just an elaborate bit.
“Is this true?!?!” the Taxi alum asked, his audible confusion sparking giggles from the audience. “I looked at the credits! I thought they were fucked up!”
Fortunately for DeVito, neither the show’s billing nor his comfy shoes were wrong.
