‘Squid Game’ season 2 teaser sees Lee Jung-jae back in the game

It’s on. Again.

Seong Gi-hun (played by Lee Jung-jae) once again competes for his life in the teaser trailer that dropped Thursday for the the second season of Netflix’s Squid Game. The trailer is less than 40 seconds long, but it quickly puts viewers back into the action, as the guards round up contestants to desperately fight for a life-changing amount of money. Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) says that he’s ready to start the game, and Seong Gi-hun is back in his tracksuit.

“Three years after winning Squid Game, Player 456 gave up going to the States and comes back with a new resolution in his mind,” the official synopsis reads. “Gi-hun once again dives into the mysterious survival game, starting another life-or-death game with new participants gathered to win the prize of 45.6 billion won.”

The cast of the Korean thriller’s new batch of episodes will include returning actors Wi Ha-jun and Gong Yoo, as well as several new actors.

To say the first season of Squid Game was a hit would be an understatement. It was Netflix’s biggest series launch ever, reaching more than 100 million people when it premiered. Acclaimed by critics, the series netted six Emmys, one of which made Lee the first lead actor in a drama series winner to come from a non-English show. He also became the first Asian man to win in the category. In addition, Squid Game was the first foreign-language series to be nominated for best drama.

A teaser released in February showed Seong Gi-hun answering a phone. The caller tells him, “You’re going to regret the choice you made.” The hero answers, “I will find you. No matter what it takes.”

Director, writer, and executive producer Hwang Dong-hyuk wrote about the upcoming episodes in a letter that accompanied the news.

“On the first day we began shooting season 2, I remember thinking, Wow, I can’t believe I’m back in the world of Squid Game,” he wrote. “It almost felt surreal. I wonder how it will feel for you to be back in Squid Game after three years, as well.”

“Seong Gi-hun, who vowed revenge at the end of season 1, returns and joins the game again,” he continued. “Will he succeed in getting his revenge? Front Man doesn’t seem to be an easy opponent this time either. The fierce clash between their two worlds will continue into the series finale with season 3, which will be brought to you next year.”

“I am thrilled to see the seed that was planted in creating a new Squid Game grow and bear fruit through the end of this story,” he wrote. “We’ll do our best to make sure we bring you yet another thrill ride.”

The streamer announced in July that the series would return for a second season Dec. 26 and for a third and final season in 2025.
