ESPYs host Shane Gillis had a hard time getting the sensitive, standoffish crowd at last night’s ceremony to so much as crack a smile, but the biggest L Gillis took was when he told a joke that definitely lost him a lucrative cabinet appointment as Secretary of Asian-American Affairs.
Back in February, President Donald Trump gave a glowing review to Gillis after the two shook hands and took a picture at Super Bowl LIX at the Superdome in New Orleans. Trump told the press that he thought Gillis was “very good” and “on our side,” despite the fact that the stand-up has been consistently critical of the Trump administration and even once joked that Trump would be the funniest president to see assassinated, prompting an investigation by the Secret Service.

Somehow, Gillis found it easier to be pals with his most popular impression target than to entertain the sea of uber-rich athletes at the ESPYs, but, as President Trump plans to stage a UFC event at the White House, Gillis managed to get in some haymakers of his own:
Seriously, even if Gillis didn’t write half or more of this double-whammy, the fact that he was willing to rip Trump for orchestrating the January 6th Capitol Attack and for covering up the Epstein files in which the President is definitely implicated in the same bit shows serious balls, considering how many Gillis fans are from the MAGA comedy crowd.
Gillis has long mocked the President in Manosphere settings, such as on the Kill Tony podcast, but this is easily the biggest stage where the stand-up superstar has arguably implied that Trump is both a terrorist and a pedophile. Already, Gillis is getting woke accusations from his usual audience, as one Twitter user commented of the above clip, “Just embarrassingly unfunny. Poor Shane got canceled then had to go woke.”
“I wouldn’t watch the espy’s if they were in my living room!!” another declared. “It is espn’s woke night to celebrate how they have completely ruined sports!”
Another added, “Ain’t gonna see Shane on Rogan no more.”
Clearly, the conservative comedy community who worshipped Gillis as a God of anti-woke, anti-cancel-culture humor has proven that they can’t take a hit as well as Dana White’s wife does, but I doubt they’ll stay mad at Gillis for long. After all, it only took them a couple Trump tweets to get over their negative feelings toward child rape.
