King Charles Shares What He’s Learned Amid Cancer Diagnosis

King Charles III is sharing insight into his cancer journey.
During an April 29 reception for cancer support organizations at Buckingham Palace, the monarch provided a rare glimpse into his own diagnosis and treatment in a written message to his guests, while praising how they “so selflessly give care, comfort and reassurance” to those battling cancer.
“Each diagnosis, each new case, will be a daunting and at times frightening experience for those individuals and their loved ones,” Charles, who cohosted the reception with wife Queen Camilla and Birgitte, Duchess of Gloucester, wrote in the booklet. “But as one among those statistics myself, I can vouch for the fact that it can also be an experience that brings into sharp focus the very best of humanity.”
The 76-year-old, who shared his diagnosis in February 2024, also took a moment to applaud healthcare workers not just for their expertise but the kindness they’ve shown him and Camilla amid his cancer journey.
“It has certainly given me an even deeper appreciation of the extraordinary work undertaken by the remarkable organisations and individuals gathered here this evening, many of whom I have known, visited and supported over the years,” Charles continued. “And it has reinforced what I have long observed during these visits—that the darkest moments of illness can be illuminated by the greatest compassion.”
