Kevin Durant on Luka Doncic trade: ‘NBA is a wild place’
But even the NBA star was left stunned on Saturday night after the Dallas Mavericks traded five-time All-Star Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for 10-time All-Star Anthony Davis.
“Insane. It’s crazy, crazy. I never would have thought Luka Doncic would get traded at this age. Mid-season,” Durant said after the Phoenix Suns lost 127-108 to the Portland Trail Blazers.
“NBA is a wild place, man. If he can get traded, then anybody’s up for grabs.”
Throughout his career, Durant has never been shy to share his opinions on league issues. He said he believes this could lead to the floodgates being open.
“Players are held to a different standard of loyalty and commitment to a program but the organizations don’t get held to that same standard from the outside,” Durant said.
“We should all be held to the same standard. It’s a transactional game, there’s a lot of money involved, a lot of business involved. We shouldn’t be too shocked about trades… it’s just the nature of playing basketball.”
Durant has played for four different teams in his career and has been a part of blockbuster deals including in 2022 when the Brooklyn Nets traded him to the Suns.
His teammate Devin Booker has been a rival of Doncic and was equally stunned by the news.
“It’s crazy, man. I really don’t know what to say about it. Luka being a guy that everybody has claimed is untouchable and untradeable. The NBA shows you again,” Booker said. “You can’t predict it. It’s a business, they’re always having conversations about you, so don’t think you’re safe (because) you’re not.”
