Hitch Director Andy Tennant and Will Smith’s Alleged Feud

Grammys 2025: Will Smith Makes First Major Award Show Appearance Since Oscars Slap

Will Smith’s foray into romantic comedies didn’t quite go off without a hitch.

Two decades after the actor starred opposite Eva Mendes in the 2005 hit Hitch, the film’s director Andy Tennant revealed he didn’t have the smoothest experience working with his onscreen lead.

“We had our difficulties,” the filmmaker said in an interview with Business Insider published Feb. 11. “The movie I wanted to make and the movie Will wanted to make, neither one of those movies is as good as the movie we made together. It was a battle.”

Andy went on to accuse the Oscar winner of trying to “back out” of the project just three days before the start of filming so he could “work on it some more.” However, the director commended Will’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith for allegedly stepping in behind the scenes.

“Jada was a big help,” he continued. “She kind of seconded some of my instincts. There was a time during prep when I was pushing back on a lot of crazy s–t that was happening.”
