Form deserts Yashasvi Jaiswal ahead of IND vs ENG Test, Indian top-order in doldrums

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s struggles in IPL spark concerns for India’s top-order ahead of ENG Test series.

Not a lot of time to go for the IND vs ENG Test series, which would begin in late June. But the Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI Selection Committee would be worried about the form of the Test team’s top-order. Yashasvi Jaiswal, who scored 391 runs in 10 innings in Australia, is now struggling in IPL 2025. After 1 and 29 in the first two innings, Jaiswal perished for just 4 runs in the RR vs CSK match in Guwahati. However, he is not the only player who has struggled in the IPL so far. His supposed opening partner, Rohit Sharma has scored a duck and 8 in the first two games.

KL Rahul, the alternate opening partner, has played just one match in IPL so far. But he could only score 15 off 5 before getting cleaned up by debutant Zeeshan Ali while trying to sweep.

Trouble for Yashasvi Jaiswal?

After a good run of form in Australia, Jaiswal sealed the opening spot. He has been the only positive sign in the struggling Test team with 1478 runs in 29 innings since 2024.

However, since the Australia tour, Jaiswal has not reached a 30-plus score in six innings. Jaiswal played just one Ranji Trophy match, scoring 4 and 26 in two innings, before he was called up for the IND vs ENG ODI series. In the only innings he played, Jaiswal could only manage 15. In the IPL, he has scores of 1, 29, and 4.

There will be two India A matches before the long 5-match Test series. As the red-ball season will begin just five days after the IPL 2025 final, Yashasvi Jaiswal will need to adapt quickly. Also, it will be Jaiswal’s first England tour and that will be an additional challenge. With Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli both out of form apart from Shubman Gill, Jaiswal will be key for India.

  • 4 & 26: Mumbai vs J&K (Ranji Trophy)
  • 15: India vs England ODI
  • 1: SRH vs RR (IPL 2025)
  • 29 off 24: RR vs KKR (IPL 2025)
  • 4 off 3: RR vs CSK (IPL 2025)

India’s top order in disarray

There seems to be no end to the struggles of India’s top order. While T20 is a different format from Tests, since the BCCI selection committee values IPL performance for Test team call-up, they must take into account the form in IPL.

India’s Test captain, Rohit Sharma, who is likely to open with Jaiswal in England, has scored 0 and 8 in the IPL 2025 so far.

KL Rahul, who missed the first match for Delhi Capitals due to the birth of his daughter, scored 15 in his DC debut.

Shubman Gill, the standby opener and No 3 batter, has also failed to convert his starts in the IPL, scoring 33 and 38 so far. While he did show good form in the ODIs, his struggles outside India are well-recorded. Some good knocks in IPL would have helped. But he hasn’t managed that so far.

India’s Top-order in Away Tests since 2024

Player Inns Runs Avg 50/100
Yashasvi Jaiswal 10 387 43 2/1
Rohit Sharma 7 86 14.33 0/0
KL Rahul 9 267 33.37 2/0
Shubman GIll 5 106 21.2 0/0
