‘ER’ star Noah Wyle returns to the operating room in ‘The Pitt’

Noah Wyle is back in his scrubs.

The actor, who memorably played Dr. John Carter on the first 11 seasons of NBC’s hit medical drama ER in the ’90s and ’00s, will soon be seen in Max’s The Pitt. As seen in the photo below, which Max dropped Wednesday, Wyle is returning to the hospital.

Officially described as “a realistic examination of the challenges facing healthcare workers in today’s America as seen through the lens of the frontline heroes working in a modern-day hospital in Pittsburgh,” The Pitt does not yet have a premiere date.

It does, however, have some familiar names in the credits. Besides Wyle, who’s also executive-producing, ER producer R. Scott Gemmill will be EP and showrunner. John Wells will exec-produce too, through his John Wells Productions, which is working with Warner Bros. Television.

The streamer ordered 15 episodes of the show back in March.

At the time, Wyle, Gemmill, and Wells said in a joint statement, “We are grateful to Warner Bros. Television and Max for giving us this opportunity to return to the world of urban medicine. The myriad of challenges facing the doctors, nurses, technicians, patients, and their families who work in the trenches of modern medicine have become only more pronounced in the decade and a half since we last visited their stories. We’re thrilled to be able to return to this world with the support of our partners and are looking forward to pushing the boundaries of dramatic realism and medical accuracy in following the lives of these heroic men and women.”

ER ended up running for 15 seasons, with Wyle returning several times after his initial departure. It’s the second longest-running medical drama in prime-time TV, behind only Grey’s Anatomy.

Wyle has said that he knew from the start that the much-watched series was going to be big. He had a hunch when he appeared alongside costars George Clooney, Anthony Edwards, Eriq La Salle, and Sherry Stringfield at a screening in New York City.

“They started showing these clips from the pilot,” Wyle said in June on the Still Here Hollywood podcast. “Just boom.”

Suddenly, there was an explosion of support. “The place went crazy, like clapping, cheering, stomping, we all got this rush,” Wyle said.

ER went on to win 23 Emmys over the course of its run.
