Danny DeVito Just Crashed the Newest Episode of ‘Rick and Morty’

The surprise star of tonight’s new episode of Rick and Morty, “The CuRicksous Case of Bethjamin Button,” was undoubtedly the mad genius Dr. Dogballs, but his appearance left us with some questions — namely, when did he change his name from Toboggan?

Thus far in Rick and Morty Season Eight, Adult Swim has kept a tight lid on the A-list talent they’ve brought in to populate the show’s expanding multiverse, and, tonight, the secrecy surrounding the show’s illustrious guest list paid off with a shocking, delightful and entirely unexpected cameo from film and TV giant Danny DeVito. While the Rick and Morty social media pages made no mention of DeVito’s appearance in “The CuRicksous Case of Bethjamin Button,” the online Rick and Morty and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia fandoms simultaneously exploded upon the first words uttered by the insane scientist Dr. Dogballs, creator of Earthworld.

Spoilers ahead for any Rick and Morty fans who missed tonight’s episode, during which DeVito ate himself like some kind of legendary A-list ouroboros.

In “The CuRicksous Case of Bethjamin Button,” Rick, Morty, Summer and Jerry all go on a family trip to Earthworld, an alien theme park built by the Earth-obsessed Dr. Dogballs, who both has never been to Earth and, in Ricks words, “sucks at making theme parks.” To Ricks disappointment, Earthworld has changed since his last visit, as it replaced the grime, disease and danger with a family-friendly, Disney-fied experience complete with big-headed mascots.

However, a deeper dive behind the scenes of Earthworld reveals that Dr. Dogballs still lurks below, waiting to unleash the horror of humanity upon the park. In just his first scene, we learn that Dr. Dogballs is, as the name implies, a zoophile, though he would never have sex with an animal himself — thats disgusting, Jerry. Then, when Rick releases Dr. Dogballs from his confinement, DeVitos character takes Rick, Jerry and Summer to the old Earthworld, before unleashing his master plan: an army of genetically engineered monsters made in the image of human celebrities who turn murderous and destroy the park at the push of a button.

Thus, Dr. Dogballs meets his end with a short, bald, bespectacled abomination tearing into his flesh with its teeth. A Danny DeVito clone monster cannibalizes Danny DeVitos character, thus ending the most memorable celebrity cameo of Rick and Morty Season Eight to date. And here we thought Charlie and Dee were the ones with the hunger.
