Love Island USA Is Back — Just Don’t Try to Be Season 6

When Love Island USA Season 7 premieres in a few days, it will come after the biggest season in the show’s history.

Love Island USA Season 6 was a hit in a way no one saw coming. It became an overnight success via word of mouth and heavy play on social media like TikTok.

The season was so popular that Peacock has now commissioned a spinoff, which is currently being filmed and will follow cast members from the sixth season around Los Angeles one year after their series premiered.

Love Island has long been a staple in other countries, most notably the United Kingdom, and across the pond, the series is front-page news when it’s on every summer.

The USA version will never be that, but it can still pull in an audience, and Peacock is likely banking on a solid showing for the newest season after amassing a ton of new viewers last summer.

But the key to any good Love Island season is keeping viewers invested through multiple weekly episodes and making it to the very end.

A lot of people will check out the premiere and see what the cast is bringing, but they won’t stick around for bland hours and uninteresting storylines.

And knowing that the new cast will most likely be familiar with what just came before them, I worry they’ll try to duplicate what came before them rather than just being themselves.

Season 6 was full of big personalities and a crazy amount of drama, but none of it felt manufactured.

When Rob Rausch jumped in the pool after a particularly stressful chat, it didn’t feel like he was doing it to create a viral moment.

But because he was overcome and just needed a moment, the pool was right there!

It sounds silly when you say it out loud, but many of that season’s “big” moments did not feel forced at all.

It felt like real people, with genuine emotions letting them out, regardless of the cameras, and not wondering what the outside world was thinking about them.

They weren’t there to grow their brands or try to attract followers in the moment.

  • Krause Control: How Peter Krause Quietly Dominated Television
  • Characters of the Week: Grey’s Anatomy and Chicago PD’s Antagonists Are Riveting

They were genuinely isolated, dealing with intense emotions and handling things the best way they could.

But many of those moments turned the season, and the islanders into overnight celebrities, and there’s no doubt that the new islanders will have seen their success and want to get in on the action.

It’s human nature, right?

You want your season to be the best of the best, and in today’s reality television landscape, most people are looking to walk away with the most followers and the most post-show opportunities.

This isn’t 2000, when social media was nothing like it is today, and Survivor and Big Brother were truly casting people who wanted to play the game and win.

They weren’t concerned about partnering up with brands post-show because that kind of thing didn’t exist back then like it does now.

But even pushing that aside, the ladies and gentlemen of this season will undoubtedly have the success from before in the back of their minds.

Hopefully, they don’t succumb to trying to mimic what came before and just stay true to who they are and what they can bring to the show.

They were all cast for a reason, and on Love Island, you have to always remember what you’re there for and not get caught up in everything that could be happening outside.

The islanders who are most remembered are the ones who appear authentic and are not looking for their five minutes of fame.

It’s naïve to think that in today’s age, everyone who goes on reality television is there for the right reasons.

Still, audiences can easily spot those genuinely on Love Island looking for something special versus those who want to be on television.

The next batch of islanders shouldn’t try to be the new Serena and Kordell or the new PPG.

Instead, they should write their own stories, trust their authenticity shines through, and allow audiences to believe in their friendships and love stories.

Don’t try to be anyone but yourself; audiences will adore you just as they did those who came before you.
