Virgo Personality Traits: What to Know About the Zodiac Sign

If you’ve ever sought cosmic guidance, you may already be aware of how your zodiac sign can help deepen your understanding of yourself. After all, your birth chart, which is comprised of a sun sign, rising sign, and moon sign, can reveal your core personality traits. If your birthday happens to fall between Aug. 22 and Sept. 22 (give or take a day or two, depending on the year), that means you’re a Virgo. And yes, there are some key Virgo traits to know and understand.

As a mutable earth sign, a key Virgo personality trait is that they have a good eye for detail and a practical approach to life, which makes them level-headed and poised. On the other hand, their aim for perfection can often translate to being overcritical. Known as being down to earth, organized, and altruistic, another key Virgo trait is that they’re always lifting up others to be the best versions of themselves.

To learn more about Virgo personality traits and what makes them tick, PS spoke with astrologers Imani Quinn and Tara Bennet. Here’s everything to know about the sixth sign in the zodiac.

What Is a Virgo?

A Virgo is the zodiac sign of anyone born during Virgo season, which falls between Aug. 22 and Sept. 22. As the sixth sign in the zodiac, Virgos are associated with the sixth house of health and wellness, which means they tend to prioritize the health and well-being of themselves and those around them. (If you have a friend who’s always been effortlessly dedicated to eating their vegetables, meditating, and sweating on the regular, they just might have some Virgo in their birth chart.)

Virgos are also ruled by Mercury, the planet responsible for all of our day-to-day functions like communication, technology, and travel. That said, you can imagine that Virgos, like their house and planetary rulers, have an affinity for logistics and details. Factor that in with Virgos being a mutable sign, and it’s no wonder why self-improvement and growth are important to them.

What Are Some Key Virgo Traits?

They’re excellent communicators. Whether through text, via email, or at a podium, Virgos have a natural ability to express themselves. They don’t have an issue with speaking their mind — no matter how direct or unfiltered. Although they can come across as blunt, you can always count on a Virgo to have good intentions, even when they present you with brutal honesty.

They’re always improving. If it seems like Virgos are never satisfied or they’re prone to giving tough love, it’s because “what some may see as judgmental and perfectionism, they see as hard work ethic and showing up as the best version of yourself,” Quinn explains. Think of constructive criticism as their special Virgo love language. “Whether at work or in their personal lives, Virgos roll up their sleeves and get to work, finding the perfect fix,” Bennet says.

They’re committed. Once a Virgo sets their mind on something, there’s no stopping them from achieving it. “They’ll stick with a project or idea till the end, pulling out all the stops to make it happen,” Bennet says. Quinn adds that they aren’t scared of tedious work. “You can find Virgos solving problems with spreadsheets and to-do lists,” she adds.

What Are Virgo Weaknesses?

They’re perfectionists. Sure, they’re organized and can pay attention to details that others tend to miss, but it’s almost to a fault. “Virgos aren’t here for frivolous acts or making mistakes,” Quinn explains. For this reason, their personality can seem intense, and you may not enjoy working with them on group projects unless you, too, have your shit together.

They’re critical. On the same note of seeming intense, Virgos tend to be critical on themselves and others, Bennet says. Try not to take it too personally, however — their criticism comes from their heart, “only wanting to help others improve or deliver perfect results,” Bennet adds.

They’re self-loathing. With all this pressure they place on themselves, it can be impossible to meet the high expectations they set for themselves sometimes. “Virgos can fall into an exhausting cycle of trying to achieve perfect but failing, ending up with a deep sense of self-loathing,” Bennet says.

What Is a Virgo’s Personality in a Relationship?

Virgos are very, very loyal. If you want someone who supports you and pushes you to be your best self in a relationship, then you’ll enjoy dating someone who has Virgo in their birth chart. “They’re there for you through thick and thin, always ready to support and offer a solution to your problems,” Bennet says.

That said, their type-A personality can make things feel overwhelming sometimes. While they may enjoy fixing your problems and organizing things in your life, this may come across as “overbearing,” Bennet says. Ultimately, however, Virgos want their partners to feel loved and cared for. “Virgos want to create the perfect space for their partner and for their relationship to grow,” Bennet says.
