News is finally starting to trickle out about Boston Blue.
CBS’ teasers haven’t revealed anything yet, which is understandable since the show is still in development and hasn’t begun filming.
The latest Boston Blue casting news introduces another character that Danny will get to know after his move, but I’m slightly worried about what the series might be attempting to do.
Maggie Lawson’s Boston Blue Role Sounds Too Similar to Beloved Blue Bloods Character
According to Deadline, Psych‘s Maggie Lawson is joining the procedural as Sarah Silver, the Superintendent of Boston Police.
When I first read this news, my mind immediately jumped to Erin Reagan, who often butted heads with Danny because he wanted her to do the impossible because of their relationship.
However, the role’s description suggests a parallel with another character: Frank.
Sarah’s character description is that of a strong-willed and decisive person, and she walks a tightrope between her job and family obligations.
As we know, Frank Reagan had an unusual dedication to integrity that made him err on the side of objectivity, even when it hurt his kids. Otherwise, Sarah sounds like a similar character.
That’ll put Danny in a more awkward and precarious position than before.
On Blue Bloods, he was the Commissioner’s son, whereas here, he’s the outsider whose only connection is that he’s partnered with the Superintendent’s stepsister.
The Latest Boston Blue Casting News Supports My Biggest Theory About the Series’ Premise
From the beginning, I suspected that Boston Blue would try to recreate the close-knit family that was so central to Blue Bloods, but with new characters.
It was the only way that the new series could carry on Blue Bloods’ legacy of family values, especially considering that Danny is the only Reagan known to be featured in the show.
Still here? You’re our kind of people.
Drop a word in the comments or share this with a fellow fan — it’s the best way to support indie TV coverage that actually cares about the shows.
This new character more or less confirms that theory, though she’s not the only character to have a direct analog on Blue Bloods.
So far, the series has cast a grandfather, daughter, and two granddaughters.
While there are a lot more women in this family than on Blue Bloods, it’s clear that it’s a similar set-up, especially given that there’s a district attorney, a Commissioner-like character, and at least one cop in the family.
Logically, this was the only thing the series could do to keep any part of Blue Bloods alive.
CBS canceled the original series due to financial expenses, so if the spinoff were to transplant most of the Reagans, it would simply be Blue Bloods 2.0, and the series would not have addressed the problems that led to the cancellation.
Still, the Latest Boston Blue Casting News Might Anger Blue Bloods Fans
Boston Blue needs to stand on its own.
If it feels like an attempt to reboot Blue Bloods by connecting Danny to a brand-new family in a different city, it’ll provoke the ire of fans who are still raw from losing their favorite show.
The Reagans aren’t the only prominent police family in the United States, so the new premise makes sense to a point, but the series needs to be careful to establish itself as a similar cop drama without seeming like a copycat.
That’s not to say that Boston Blue WILL be a cheap knockoff.
I think the premise of Blue Bloods reimagined has promise.
This family has more women in law enforcement and criminal justice than Blue Bloods, and it is an interracial family.
If it has a similar feel, it can demonstrate that all types of families hold similar values.
Still, to succeed, it will have to appeal to a new audience rather than trying to win over Blue Bloods fans, many of whom are skeptical enough without the new family trying to be Reagans 2.0.
