This Is Not A Fiction Festival Returns With Conan O’Brien & Errol Morris
American Cinematheque’s This Is Not A Fiction Festival is returning for its second season.
The festival launched last year with screenings of Thank You, Good Night: The Bon Jovi Story, featuring a Jon Bon Jovi Q&A and Morgan Neville’s Steve! (Martin) A Documentary in 2 Pieces.
It is now returning with a slew of new premieres, screenings and appearances from the likes of Conan O’Brien, Survivor’s Jeff Probst, Errol Morris and Documentary Now!’s Bill Hader and Fred Armisen.
The second season premiere of Max’s Conan O’Brien Must Go will kick off the event on April 9 with a Q&A with the Oscars host.
The event, which runs through April 17, will also feature a 10th anniversary screening of IFC’s Documentary Now! and Probst is hosting Tribute to Survivor: An Evening with Jeff Probst.
Morris will be honored with a retrospective that includes Gates of Heaven, Vernon, Florida, The Thin Blue Line, A Brief History of Time, Fast, Cheap & Out of Control and his latest Netflix doc Chaos: The Manson Murders. Kazuo Hara will also receive his first ever Los Angeles retrospective featuring his early films Goodbye CP, Extreme Private Eros: Love Song 1974 and the west coast premiere of Minamata Mandala.
Morris and Hara will also appear together for a conversation following a screening of The Emperor’s Naked Army Marches On introduced by Bill Hader on April 12.
The event takes place at AC’s Aero, Egyptian and Los Feliz 3 theaters.
Other screenings and premieres including I Know Catherine, The Log Lady, Rodney Ascher’s Ghost Boy, Number One on The Call Sheet, Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band and Sly Lives!.
The third season of HBO’s 100 Foot Wave will close out the festival.
American Cinematheque Senior Film Programmer Chris LeMaire said, “We could not be more thrilled to have two legends of documentary filmmaking—Errol Morris and Kazuo Hara—in town at the same time for our centerpiece retrospectives. Throughout their careers, these filmmakers have expanded our understanding of what the documentary artform can be, and it will be an incredibly special opportunity for our audience to hear them in conversation to discuss Hara’s 1987 The Emperor’s Naked Army Marches On, an extraordinary film that features some of the most unbelievable moments ever captured.”
“We’re very proud of this year’s lineup which continues on the exciting track we laid last year by looking at nonfiction filmmaking from an ever-expanding view, featuring not only the pantheon of classic documentaries and cutting-edge contemporary work, but also everything from live television sports coverage, reality TV, travelogues, playful mockumentary form and more,” added Cindy Flores, Programmer, American Cinematheque.
