The Yankees’ Latest George Costanza Bobblehead Has One Glaring Omission

The New York Yankees will once again honor the greatest assistant to the traveling secretary in franchise history with yet another George Costanza bobblehead.

The collectible will be given out on August 21st, during a game against the Boston Red Sox. It’s all part of the team’s “Seinfeld Night,” which sounds a whole lot better than “The Yankees Screw Jason Alexander Out of Royalties Night.”

Last year’s plastic homage to George featured the iconic public urinator posing with a baseball bat while dressed in his work clothes, in a recreation of a scene from the episode “The Abstinence.” Although it’s unclear if the Yankees ever attempted to similarly improve their athletic skills through celibacy.

This year, the Yankees’ promotional team have taken inspiration from Season Eight’s “The Nap,” the one where George hires a contractor to construct a space for a comfy bed underneath the desk in his office, which is perfect for clandestine naps during work hours. As we’ve mentioned before, George may have been slightly ahead of the curve with this novel workplace innovation.

While it may seem a little odd that the Yankees are choosing to highlight an episode in which one of their employees sleeps all day and then forces his best friend to call in a bomb threat to Yankee Stadium, a lot of people seem to be quite excited about the promotion. In fact, resellers on eBay are already hawking the bobbleheads that they don’t actually own yet for as much as $250. Although, that’s still not as expensive as a signed George Costanza rookie card

But some fans on social media couldn’t help but point out that the bobblehead is missing a key detail from the tiny desk: George’s custom alarm clock shelf.

The shelf, built by Jerry’s overly-picky contractor Conrad, is far from unimportant. It gives us George’s “Icarus flying too close to the sun” moment. George becomes overly greedy for extra comforts, and the alarm clock ends up being the unnecessary extravagance that leads to the destruction of the desk-bed when George Steinbrenner mistakes it for an explosive device and calls in the bomb squad, who promptly saw through the desk with their bomb defusing robot.

Incidentally, the bobblehead makers also seem to have opted not to include the bags of candy and Playboy magazine (“empty calories and male curiosity,” as Steinbrenner puts it) that George keeps stashed away. It does cause one to wonder what else he was doing under that desk exactly…
