After the series finale of Game of Thrones I swore off watching television with the internet for a very long time. It was a tweet that made me watch the show, and it was on Twitter where I collectively suffered with millions of other viewers as we watched that ending.
But GOT wasn’t the first — nor the last — show to seriously let down its audience. A prompt in the r/Sitcoms subreddit got everyone talking about which sitcom endings were the most disappointing.
Don’t Miss
To no one’s surprise, a screencap from How I Met Your Mother was part of the prompt question. One commenter said they called the show “Asking My Children’s Permission to Bang Their Aunt Robin.” But in the more than 800 responses, there were some less obvious selections as well. These are the top shows mentioned and upvoted as having downright disappointing endings:
- Roseanne
- Two and a Half Men
- Married with Children
- Laverne & Shirley
- The King of Queens
- Seinfeld
- Alf
A lot of people had thoughts on how the original run of Roseanne concluded, with most saying they absolutely hated the ending having the “it was all a dream trope.” Charlie’s end in Two and a Half Men also rankled people. There were a few consistent ribs about Seinfeld and Alf as well. But without a doubt, the number one complaint was about HIMYM. People are still pissed, even though the show ended more than 11 years ago. Some 2025 reviews:
- “HIMYM still breaks my heart all these years later. I adored that show.”
- “The show ending didn’t just suck because she was dead. I could have dealt with that, and at some point it seemed like that may even be where they were going with it. Instead, they ruined every single character.”
- “ I thought it would be a show I’d rewatch; like a comfort show that you can watch an episode anytime. Nope- ending was so awful that I have never and will never watch an episode again.”
- “HIMYM has one of those endings that ruins the rest of the show.”
It goes on like that for quite a while. While every other sitcom mention gets ire and frustration, there’s clearly real, deep hatred for the way HIMYM ended.
