Sundance Head is recovering after suffering a gunshot to the stomach on his Texas ranch.
The Voice winner, 46, was hit with a bullet while hunting in rural Texas, his agent, Trey Newman, tells Entertainment Weekly. “Sundance is stable,” Newman says. “His wife just got to the hospital. The doctor said it was a gunshot wound to the navel area, the stomach, and the bullet apparently missed all vital organs and lodged in a fatty area of the stomach.”
Newman said that the wound was not self-inflicted, and that the singer called 911 himself to get emergency help. “We know it was either an accident or a nearby hunter — a stray bullet, possibly,” the singer’s agent says.
Head’s agent said that the initial plan was to begin surgery on the musician upon his arrival to the hospital in Tyler, Texas, but after the doctor assessed his wound, the medical team decided it was not immediately necessary. “As of right now, he is not having surgery,” Newman tells EW.
The singer’s wife, Misty, posted an update on the Head’s Facebook page on Friday night. “Prayer Warriors we need y’all,” she wrote. “I don’t have a lot of information but please keep Sundance in your prayers. Sundance has been life flighted with a gun shot wound to his stomach per the paramedics who called me. They told me once they land he’s going in for immediate surgery. They did get him stable for the flight (per the paramedic).”

Head is best known for his triumphant win on season 11 of The Voice in 2016, where he performed songs by Miley Cyrus, Keith Urban, Alicia Keys, and the Judds to secure a victory as part of Team Blake Shelton.
The musician previously competed on season 6 of American Idol in 2007. He was eliminated after performing tracks by Moody Blues, Mack Rice, and Pearl Jam, making it to the Top 16. Jordin Sparks ultimately won the season.
Head has released four studio albums since his time on Idol: 2012’s 2016 & Gruene, 2015’s Soul Country, 2019’s Stained Glass and Neon, and 2022’s Starting Again.
The singer currently has nine shows across Texas lined up in December alone, and has almost a dozen more scheduled early in the new year.
