COMEDY

The Time Noel Gallagher Met Jerry ‘F***ing’ Seinfeld

What’s weirder — that Oasis star Noel Gallagher once met Jerry Seinfeld or that he didn’t mercilessly bash the comedian when he told Rolling Stone?

Gallagher was mixing his Who Built the Moon? album back in the mid-2010s when he wrapped his studio session on a Friday. “See you Monday,” he told the engineer.

“Oh, we’re not in Monday, Tuesday.”

Gallagher wanted to know why not. The engineer said he’d been told not to come in. “Who the fuck told you not to come in?” the singer exploded. “I run the fucking record label — who told you not to come in?”

The engineer shrugged and told Gallagher to check with his office. The office also deflected, telling Gallagher to check with his wife, Sarah. In his typical professional manner, Gallagher asked, “What the fuck’s it got to do with her?”

The mystery was solved, in part, when Sarah told him that she was taking him to New York for a surprise birthday experience that would blow his mind. That sounds like a sweet gesture for anyone except Noel Gallagher. “I fucking hate surprises. I cannot handle it. I can’t handle it. I go insane if I don’t know what the fuck’s going on.”

But he flew to New York and actually got excited when a hired driver took Gallagher and his wife past the Dakota Building, the one-time home of his hero, John Lennon. “Maybe she’s taking me to see fucking John Lennon’s house,” Gallagher speculated. “That would be amazing.” Instead, the driver kept going. “Fuck, it’s not that.”

Gallagher started to seethe — was she taking him to a fancy New York restaurant full of his London friends? He could see his London friends in London! But the surprise wasn’t dinner. Instead, the driver took them to the Beacon Theatre, where two men in suits took them inside.

If there was a marquee outside the theater advertising the night’s main act, Gallagher didn’t see it. The facility was packed, and everyone started clapping for the show’s star. “Jerry Seinfeld walks on stage and I’ve never seen him ever and I’m like fuck!” he said. “The funniest thing ever. One of the greatest nights, crying, laughing, unbelievable.”

But Gallagher’s spouse wasn’t done. After the show, Sarah took him to meet the comedian. “I fucking ended up in a lift with Sarah and Jerry Seinfeld’s wife, right?” The small elevator that went from the Beacon stage to Seinfeld’s dressing room was “about as big as this chair,” Gallagher remembered.

Finally, Jerry entered the elevator. “Hey.”

“No fucking way,” said Gallagher.

“Great to see you,” replied a perplexed Seinfeld.

Jessica Seinfeld jumped in. “Jerry, this is the guy from London. It’s his birthday! I told you!”

Jerry wasn’t having it. “I don’t think you did.”

“Jerry, I told you — it’s his birthday!”

“No, you didn’t tell me.”

For Gallagher, no stranger to awkward discomfort, it was heaven. He turned to his wife. “We’re in a scene from Seinfeld!” he said. “It’s fucking unbelievable.”
