‘The Princess Diaries 3’ is happening after securing director
Shut up!
The Princess Diaries 3 is officially a go, as Disney has tapped Adele Lim to direct the feature, Entertainment Weekly has learned. The filmmaker directed last year’s raunchy comedy Joy Ride and co-wrote the screenplay for Jon M. Chu’s 2018 blockbuster Crazy Rich Asians.
“As a die-hard fan of the original Princess Diaries, I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life,” Lim said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “We look forward to celebrating its core tenants of female power, joy, and mentorship with audiences worldwide.”
Representatives for Disney did not immediately respond to EW’s request for comment.

Anne Hathaway, who became a star after her performance in the lead role as teenager Mia Thermopolis in the 2001 hit and its 2004 sequel, is expected to reprise her role, though Disney has yet to set anything in Genovian stone with an official announcement, including whether Julie Andrews will reprise her role as Mia’s regal grandmother and the former queen of Genovia, Clarisse.
“We’re in a good place,” Hathaway told V magazine, discussing the threequel earlier this year. “That’s all I can say. There’s nothing to announce yet. But we’re in a good place.”
The late Garry Marshall directed the first movie, which followed a San Francisco teen who learns she’s heir apparent to the crown of the small European principality of Genovia. With help from a grandmother she hardly knows, she embarks on princess lessons. The film also starred Heather Matarazzo, Mandy Moore, Héctor Elizondo, Sandra Oh, and Robert Schwartzman.
Marshall returned to direct the sequel with a screenplay from none other than Shonda Rhimes. It trailed Mia’s search for a suitor as she prepared to take the throne — and introduced Chris Pine as her new love interest Nicholas Devereaux.
Oh, who played memorable Vice Principal Gupta in the first film, told EW last year that she was more than ready to reprise her role for the threequel, relaying the following message to its creative team: “I am ready for the Queen. Call me! I’m dying to see how Gupta has moved up in the world.”
