The Parisian socialite peeling back the curtain behind ‘effortless’ French It-Girl style: Mathilde Favier, 54 – who has links to everyone from Carla Bruni to Sofia Coppola, with a 23-year-old son who has dated Emma Raducanu – says being chic is hard work

A Parisian socialite who is connected to everyone from Nicolas Sarkozy’s ex-wife Carla Bruni to the late Karl Lagerfield has peeled back the curtain behind French women’s effortless chic lifestyle.

In an interview with The Times, Mathilde Favier, 54, said that it’s a ‘big lie’ to suggest that the quintessential European glamour so many strive towards isn’t hard work.

‘It’s never effortless,’ she said. ‘Some people are so charming, they make it look effortless.

‘But if somebody very thin is saying to you, “Oh, it’s funny, actually I eat a lot,” it’s never true.

‘They are always very careful; they eat the right things. Life is an effort. When you make some, life is more beautiful and special.’

However, she says Parisiennes still ‘always want it to look real’.

It-Girl Mathilde – who was pals with Sofia Coppola and even starred in her 2006 movie Marie Antoinette – also revealed how to her, chic is all about making deliberate choices to pick out things that are refined and unique.
