8 Real-Life Survival Stories That Defy Logic

Hugh Glass

Hugh Glass, a seasoned explorer and fur trapper, was part of an expedition in South Dakota when he was viciously mauled by a mother grizzly bear protecting her cubs. The attack left him with exposed ribs, a broken leg, and severe lacerations. His fellow trappers assumed he wouldn’t survive and abandoned him, covering him with a bear hide. However, Glass regained consciousness, set his own leg, and let maggots devour necrotic tissue to prevent gangrene.

Without any weapons or supplies, he wrapped himself in the same bear hide and crawled over 200 miles to Fort Kiowa. Along the way, he survived by eating wild berries, roots, and scavenged bison meat. He also floated down the Cheyenne River on a self-made raft. Native Americans reportedly sewed the bear hide into his skin to protect his wounds. His survival spurred a legend, and although he sought revenge on those who left him, he ultimately forgave them.

Hugh’s story was the inspiration for the 2015 film ‘The Revenant’, starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
