‘South Park’ Fans Flock to Local Libraries in Order to See ‘Banned’ Episodes

As we’ve mentioned before, the back catalogue of South Park episodes will be streaming exclusively on Paramount+ beginning in July. Unless of course, it just continues to stream on HBO Max/Max/HBO Max Again, as some reports have suggested. The plan is basically about as straightforward as the plan to cure Mr. Mackey’s childhood trauma by visiting the subconscious layer of reality that’s “like a taco inside taco within a Taco Bell that’s inside a KFC that’s within a mall that’s inside your dream.”

But the biggest worry amongst South Park fans right now concerns which episodes will still be available to the public going forward.

HBO Max and Hulu famously removed five episodes from the show’s streaming library “because they depicted a character based on the Prophet Muhammad.” But the Paramount+ move sparked rumors that the streamer would pull a number of other episodes from circulation, including “Big Gay Al’s Big Gay Boat Ride,” “Simpsons Did It” and the Scientology-themed “Trapped in the Closet.”

While nothing has been confirmed yet, the fact that Paramount+ made an enemy out of Nathan Fielder for scrapping an episode of Nathan for You about Holocaust awareness,  doesn’t exactly bode well for the show’s future.

In response to the news, South Park fans have been buying up South Park DVDs and Blu-rays as if they were toilet paper rolls in March of 2020. After all, corporations can’t alter physical copies of movies and TV shows without breaking into your home.

But since not everyone has the money to splurge on DVD box sets right now, some South Park fans on Reddit have been urging people who want to see the uncensored version of the show to visit their local library, just like Steve Urkel recommended in the ‘90s.

A lot of libraries carry South Park DVDs, which is why fans floated the idea of visiting branches to access these “banned” episodes. “Libraries are the best,” one person added. “Legitimately a perfect example of why libraries are extremely important,” someone else chimed in.

Another user similarly posted a message signaling that libraries are a great way to “legally” watch all the South Park content that hasn’t been made available on streaming. Just as long as your local library hasn’t been demolished to make room for a celebrity vanity restaurant.

They’re right, of course, we should all make sure to support libraries. Although, come to think of it, it’s a little surprising that South Park fans are so supportive of this idea considering that the show’s second season suggested that librarians occasionally engage in acts of bestiality as part of machiavellian schemes to promote literacy.
