Yashasvi Jaiswal on brink of breaking 49-year-old batting record, could surpass Sunil Gavaskar

In the last couple of years, when the Indian batters have generally struggled to score in Tests, Yashasvi Jaiswal averages over 50.

Despite slamming a ton in the first innings of the first England Test in Leeds, India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal had a very forgettable outing. The youngster went on to drop four simple catches across both the innings, which put a lot of pressure on the team. Nonetheless, he is still the team’s best batter — one who comfortably averages over 50.

Yashasvi Jaiswal Fastest to 2K Runs?

Now, come the second Test, he has an opportunity to break a long-standing Indian record. when the Birmingham Test starts from July 2, Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has 1903 runs in 20 Tests, has the chance to become the fastest Indian batter to 2000 Test runs, a record that is held by Sunil Gavaskar for the last 49 years.

Could Get Past Sunil Gavaskar

Gavaskar had achieved the landmark only in his 23rd Test, while Gautam Gambhir, second on the list, got to the milestone in only 24 matches. The next on the list is Virender Sehwag and Rahul Dravid in 25 Tests each. Meanwhile, the overall record is held by Don Bradman, who reached 2000 runs in his 15th match only. George Headley reached the milestone in 17 matches.

That said, in terms of innings played, the Indian record stands at 40 — both Dravid and Sehwag hold it jointly. Jaiswal currently has played only 38 innings, so that record can also be broken by him.
