‘SNL’ star Andy Samberg disliked ‘Laser Cats 3’ sketch upon rewatch

Meow! Andy Samberg has some criticism of “Laser Cats.”

The short film from the comedy trio behind short films such as “Dick in a Box,” “Lazy Sunday,” and “Jack Sparrow” was the topic of discussion on a recent episode of The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast, featuring the Saturday Night Live alums.

Andy Samberg isn’t the biggest fan of the third ‘Laser Cats’ film.

Meyers broached the subject of the third installment in the franchise by the Lonely Island — Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone — by saying that Samberg had texted that it didn’t hold up for him after one of the hosts’ regular rewatches.

“I went into it with an open mind,” Samberg said. “I thought it had a couple of yuks, and it didn’t blow me away. I think I preferred the two prior, and I think it’s sort of a stop-gap one, where it gets to another phase of ‘Laser Cats,’ and it gets better again, in my opinion.”

The first “Laser Cats” sketch debuted on SNL in 2006. The conceit was that cast members Samberg and Bill Hader were trying to talk SNL creator Lorne Michaels into adding their low-budget sci-fi film to the show. It hilariously involved lasers, cats, and — Christopher Walken!

The third part of the saga, a 3D version, debuted in 2008, but several more installments aired over the next few years.

While the Lonely Island as a group left SNL years ago, they returned in the show’s current season 50, with a short that was not related to cats, with or without lasers. They brought audiences the future classic “Sushi Glory Hole.”
