Secuoya Studios & BlackBox Multimedia In First-Look Production Deal

EXCLUSIVE: Secuoya Studios is stepping into the UK. The Spanish powerhouse has inked a first-look development and production deal with The Castaways and This Time Next Year producer BlackBox Multimedia.

Under the deal, the two companies will join forces to co-produce premium series for the UK and Spanish markets at Secuoya Group’s facilities Madrid Content City in Tres Cantos, Spain.

The move marks the first time the Spanish studio is entering the UK market and is part of Secuoya Group’s larger strategy to produce more English-language content. At the Iberseries & Platino Industria confab in October, Secuoya Studios announced a global expansion plan to produce 30% of the studio’s content catalog in languages other than Spanish language, enabling the studio and its partners to develop multiple projects in parallel in different markets and language.

London-based BlackBox Multimedia, which was founded by former Lionsgate UK COO Guy Avshalom, has developed and co-produced a raft of Paramount+ shows such as thriller series The Ex-Wife, Sheridan Smith starrer The Castaways and The Serial Killer’s Wife. The company also has operations in Rome and Barcelona.

It focuses on high-end scripted drama and launched its film slate last year with the release of rom-com This Time Next Year, starring Sophie Cookson and Emily in Paris series regular Lucien Laviscount. That project will soon debut on Roku in the U.S. BlackBox is also behind Italian horror film Home Education, one of the top 10 highest grossing Italian horror films in the last 30 years, which it co-produced with Warner Brothers Italia.

“We are delighted to partner with BlackBox Multimedia to bring innovative and exciting stories to life – stories capable of captivating global audiences,” said Brendan Fitzgerald, CEO of Secuoya Studios. “Their solid experience in the British market brings invaluable expertise and a global perspective that will greatly enrich our joint projects.”

BlackBox Multimedia Managing Director Chiara Cardoso said: “We could not be more excited to start the year with the launch of this new partnership. We’ve always been firm champions of international co-productions, and we are thrilled to be the creative partner of a force like Secuoya Studios in the English-speaking market. Their ambitions match our vision of what the new generation of European producers will look like, and we’re excited to embark on this mission together.”

Secuoya Studios produces close to 1,500 hours of television per year in series, premium docs, travel, regional news and more. It already has a strategic partnership in the U.S. with Rubicon Global Media, which is headed up by Chris Albrecht and Jorge Granier. The Spanish outfit, founded by Raul Berdonés in 2007, runs the sprawling Madrid Content Studios, located in Tres Cantos, a suburb just north of the Spanish capital.
