Welcome to our special segment, DRS or the Daily Review System. In this, InsideSport will provide you with the top cricket stories from a day before that you might have missed in the hustle and bustle of your busy life.
So, out of the ten Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 teams, two are out. The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and the Rajasthan Royals (RR) have exited from the tournament after their recent losses to Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Mumbai Indians (MI). The Sanju Samson-led side suffered a humiliating 100-run defeat at home. In that game, Suryakumar Yadav continued his superb form, while Rohit Sharma also hit a fifty. Meanwhile, Suryakumar’s tally of runs has seen him go past Virat Kohli for now too. Apart from this, there have been massive calls on CSK’s strategy before the next IPL, with cricketing pundits believing they should let go veteran Ravichandran Ashwin after IPL 2025. On that note, let us skim through the top six cricketing stories from May 1, Thursday.
Suryakumar overtakes Kohli & …
Suryakumar Yadav is on fire! He’s just broken a 10-year-old record by scoring over 25 in 11 straight IPL games. That’s a crazy streak! Robin Uthappa held the previous record with 10 consecutive games, but SKY has taken it to the next level. And to top it off, he’s reclaimed the Orange Cap with his consistent performances. He’s been a beast this season, and Mumbai Indians are riding high on his form. Virat Kohli and others are watching from behind as SKY takes the lead. Read more here.
CSK to let go Ashwin?
CSK may release Ravichandran Ashwin and Matheesha Pathirana due to their underwhelming performances in IPL 2025. Ashwin, purchased for Rs 9.75 crore, has been expensive and ineffective, taking only 5 wickets in 7 matches at an economy rate of 9.29. Retained at Rs 13 crore, Pathirana has also been costly, conceding 298 runs in 8 matches. Former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar suggests CSK might part ways with them to free up their purse and find replacements. With CSK already eliminated from the playoffs, the team may look to make changes for next season. Read more here.
RR out of IPL 2025
Sanju Samson-led Rajasthan Royals (RR) have been officially knocked out of IPL 2025 following a crushing 100-run defeat to Mumbai Indians in Jaipur. The loss leaves RR stuck on six points with only three matches remaining, making it mathematically impossible for them to reach the playoffs. Even if they win all their remaining games, their maximum tally of 12 points won’t be enough, as five other teams have already reached or surpassed that mark with superior net run rates. It marks a disappointing end to a campaign that began with promise but fizzled out, leaving Sanju Samson’s side to play only for pride. Read more here.
Latest on Cricket
CSK call Urvil Patel?
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have been calling up players for mid-season trials in IPL 2025, and the latest name is Urvil Patel, according to Wasim Jaffer. Patel, a record holder for hitting the second-fastest T20 hundred ever, has been called for trials despite going unsold in the IPL 2025 auction. Interestingly, CSK had also called Ayush Mhatre for trials before signing him as a replacement for injured Ruturaj Gaikwad. CSK’s unusual approach shows they’re desperate for solutions after a dismal season, becoming the first team to get eliminated from the playoffs. Patel’s talent might just catch their eye. Vignesh Puthur out of IPL 2025
Mumbai Indians’ (MI) young spinner Vignesh Puthur’s IPL 2025 season has ended prematurely due to a bone stress reaction in both shins. Puthur made a promising debut against CSK, picking up three wickets, and went on to play five matches, taking five wickets. MI has replaced him with Raghu Sharma, a talented bowler with a good track record in domestic cricket. Raghu has played for Punjab and Pondicherry, taking 14 wickets in nine matches in the 2024-25 Vijay Hazare Trophy. Vignesh, however, will stay with the team for recovery and rehabilitation. PBKS lose Glenn Maxwell
Glenn Maxwell’s IPL 2025 season has been cut short due to a fractured finger. The Australian all-rounder has struggled with form, scoring 48 runs in 6 innings and taking 4 wickets. PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer confirmed the injury and said they haven’t decided on a replacement yet. Maxwell’s absence is a blow to PBKS, who are already missing Lockie Ferguson due to injury. For the upcoming games, Iyer might rely on Azmatullah Omarzai and Suryansh Shedge to fill in. PBKS will need to find a suitable replacement as they are likely to qualify for playoffs as well.
