Samson has played for Rajasthan Royals for 11 seasons and has been their captain since 2021.
For over a month, rumours of a potential Sanju Samson trade have been swirling around. The Rajasthan Royals (RR) captain struggled with the bat and injuries in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. In his absence, 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi thrived, and Yashasvi Jaiswal continued to be RR’s best batter since his debut.
Rumours of Samson joining CSK
Many assumed that RR didn’t need his services anymore with Jaiswal potentially taking over as captain for the IPL 2026 season. The rumours gained further traction when Samson’s agent, Prashobh Sudevan, liked a social media post hinting that the 30-year-old could potentially move to Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
A few days later, it emerged that the two champion teams might do a player trade. Samson would join CSK, and RR would get Ravichandran Ashwin and Shivam Dube in return. And it didn’t stop there. Cricbuzz shared that CSK was interested in having Samson in the team, provided he was available.
The move seemed a logical one. While one doesn’t know whether MS Dhoni is retiring, if and when he does, Samson would just take over from him as CSK’s wicketkeeper.
To continue as RR captain?
Post the IPL 2025, Samson also travelled to the USA, and reports allege he met with CSK management there on the sidelines of the Major League Cricket (MLC). RR management also completed a review meeting in London, in the presence of head coach Rahul Dravid.
We don’t know what they discussed, but it’s safe to assume retention and release were part of the conversation, with a mini auction coming up before the IPL 2026 season. These added more flame to the fire. But Samson may have rubbished all of these rumours.
Earlier today, Samson and RR’s Head of International Player Development, Siddhartha Lahiri, met in person. Both have worked together in the IPL and seem to share a good bond. One has to wonder if things were not merry, why Samson would meet him. Moreover, Lahiri posted the image online and wrote, “Lunch with the skipper is always great fun.”
