Russian ship sinks in Mediterranean after explosion

A Russian cargo ship sank in the Mediterranean Sea on Monday leaving two of the 16 crew members unaccounted for according to the country’s authorities.

Fourteen of the crewmen were rescued and taken to a Spanish port after the crash, caused by an explosion in the engine room, plunged the ship into the waters near Spain.

Russian authorities said Ursa Major was transporting 380 ton freight cranes for a Russian state project seeking to develop port infrastructure.

Oboronlogistika, the company that manages the ship, said it was headed to the city of Vladivostok.

However, Kyiv intelligence officials reported the ship was headed for Syria with a mission to collect Russia’s weapons after Bashar al-Assad fled his post as the nation’s leader following rebel’s conquest of Damascus.
