Resident Alien Stars Meredith Garretson and Sara Tomko on Motherhood, Growth, and the Power of Self-Discovery

Season 4 of Resident Alien may be packed with action, but at its core, it remains a story about identity, connection, and the relationships that bind us to our humanity, even in the face of extraterrestrial chaos. 

Meredith Garretson and Sara Tomko, who play Kate and Asta, respectively, offered rich insight into their characters’ journeys this season in a warm, candid conversation with TV Fanatic.

For Meredith Garretson, Season 4 finds Kate in survival mode. 

After discovering the unthinkable — that aliens not only exist but have abducted her newborn — Kate is left reeling.

Her ordered worldview has crumbled, and the only power she feels she has left is in preparing for the next time they come. 

“Her back’s up against the wall,” Garretson explained, noting that Kate is physically and mentally arming herself in hopes of reclaiming her child. 

That drive also reshapes her connections in town, especially with Asta and D’arcy, who have known more than they’ve said.

Sara Tomko’s Asta, on the other hand, has already been steeped in alien reality. 

But what struck both actresses — and viewers — is the unspoken bond their characters could have shared: both have lost children under very different but equally heartbreaking circumstances. 

Tomko was quick to point out how much she’d hoped to explore that shared experience.

“I would’ve been able to give hope in that moment,” she said, imagining a deeper conversation between Asta and Kate that, for now, remains unrealized. 

The missed connection reflects the emotional isolation both characters feel, even in a town as tight-knit (and weird) as Patience.

Still, Resident Alien Season 4 isn’t just about survival — it’s about healing. 

As Garretson explained, the stormy dynamic between Kate and Ben continues, but ultimately, their bond is strengthened through adversity. “We team up and fight for our family,” she said.

That fight includes not just getting their baby back but also understanding the mystery that is Max, their son who has been hiding extraordinary abilities right under their noses.

For Asta, this season marks a turning point in self-awareness. After years of putting everyone else first — Jay, Harry, even D’arcy — she finally begins to ask a radical question: “What do I want?” 

Tomko described Asta’s arc as one of layered healing, from shame to forgiveness to something more rare on television: a woman learning to love herself without needing anyone else to define her. 

It’s a quiet but powerful thread in a show otherwise filled with murder boards and alien conspiracies.

Both actresses bring a rawness and humanity to their roles that elevate Resident Alien beyond its genre trappings. 

Season 4 gives them the chance to deepen those roles — and if their reflections are any indication, fans are in for something truly meaningful.
