Report: Sean Manaea staying with Mets on three-year, $75 million contract
Manaea and the New York Mets have agreed to a three-year, $75 million contract, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported early Monday.
The 32-year-old southpaw is coming off arguably the best season of his career after throwing 181.2 innings for the Mets in 2024 with a 3.47 ERA, 184 strikeouts and a 1.08 WHIP while holding opposing hitters to a .201 batting average.
A mid-season change in his delivery helped Manaea break through the second half of 2024, emerging as one of the top arms in a solid Mets rotation. After the All-Star break, the six-foot-four Manaea pitched to a 3.05 ERA with 124 strikeouts in 121 innings while walking just 38 hitters.
His efforts earned him an 11th-place finish in Cy Young voting and led him to decline a $13.5 million option and the qualifying offer for 2025.
Manaea became a go-to option for the Mets in their run to the NLCS, as he was excellent through his first three post-season starts, allowing just five runs across 17 innings. Ultimately, he was the losing pitcher of record in Game 6 of the NLCS, as the Los Angeles Dodgers piled five runs on against Manaea over two innings in the game that sent New York packing.
Over nine big league seasons, Manaea has pitched with the Mets, Oakland Athletics, San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants. He was originally selected in the first round of the 2013 draft by the Kansas City Royals but was traded to Oakland before debuting in 2016.
