‘Red, White & Royal Blue’ is getting a movie sequel

Throw some cake in your hair and get ready to make history — Red, White & Royal Blue is getting a sequel.

Author Casey McQuiston, who wrote the novel on which the film is based, will team up with the film’s screenwriter and director, Matthew López, to write the script. Leads Taylor Zakhar Perez and Nicholas Galitzine are also set to reprise their roles.

Based on McQuiston’s novel of the same name, the romantic comedy debuted last summer on Prime Video to much acclaim. The story follows the First Son of the United States, Alex Claremont-Diaz (Perez) and Prince Henry of England (Galitzine) as their fraught relationship slowly transforms into something more when the two are forced to fake a friendship after finding themselves at the center of a diplomatic incident.

Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter of Bertanti Schechter Films are also returning to produce, alongside Michael McGrath, López, and McQuiston.

Amazon MGM Studios is keeping plot details tightly under wraps. Further information including a tentative release date are still to be determined.

Since McQuiston’s novel debuted in 2019 and became a New York Times bestseller, fans have clamored for a sequel, wanting to see more from Alex and Henry after they reached their happy ending and proclaimed their love to the world. McQuiston will not pen a second novel at this time, but instead, they will be directly involved with writing the screenplay.

Entertainment Weekly recently asked Perez and Galitzine about a potential sequel on The Awardist podcast. “I’m over here glazed over because this is the question I get every day in my life,” Perez quipped. “I’m waiting for Casey to announce the second book… Matthew got the opportunity to adapt it, but Casey is the brain behind this world and these characters. And you would want Casey’s touch in there because they’re so smart and kind.”

Perez also commented on the importance of the film and its themes to the broader world. “To have another one of those films like this that had such a great response, and in countries where it’s quite literally illegal to be queer in these countries, it was No. 1 on Amazon,” he said. “So you know that throughout the world, where there’s eight billion people, there’s eight percent of them identify as LGBTQIA+, that’s 640 million people that are watching this. Hopefully. You would love to affect that many people. And then the community around them, I think it’s just as important for those a part of the community and those that are not part of the community to watch this project and just learn something, enjoy it, laugh.”

Now, audiences will get the chance to do that a second time.
