‘Rebel Moon’ VR Game Launches From Netflix, Sandbox VR
A virtual reality game based on Zack Snyder’s “Rebel Moon” franchise at Netflix is launching from Sandbox VR.
Titled “Rebel Moon: The Descent,” the experience will see players “gear up with their fellow rebels for battle against the ruthless forces of the Motherworld’s military,” per the game’s description. “Inspired by the vision of legendary director Zack Snyder, players become members of the resistance and are transported to the planet of Daggus, where they experience what it’s like to descend through towering skyscrapers, gritty urban streets, and a subterranean mine while they defeat enemy soldiers and spacecraft.”
The “Rebel Moon” experience initially launched as a limited preview from Sandbox in London along with the release of “Rebel Moon — Part Two” in April 2024. As of Tuesday, the “Rebel Moon: The Descent” game is now available at all 55 of Sandbox VR’s locations worldwide.
The game marks the 10th immersive VR experience created by Sandbox’s in-house gaming studio and the location-based VR experience company’s second collaboration with Netflix following the September 2023 launch of “Squid Game Virtuals.” According to Sandbox VR, “Squid Game Virtuals” became its fastest experience ever to hit $1 million in sales. In its first two months, the game generated $4.56 million in ticket sales at physical venues.
Netflix and Sandbox VR are currently in talks to develop other popular IP owned by the streamer into VR game experiences.
“We’re exploring a couple others right now, nothing signed yet,” Sandbox VR CEO Steve Zhao told Variety. “But having worked with Netflix on two IPs already and getting the hang of working with them, and we love them, it’s just very organic for us to see what else is there. This could be definitely a multi-year relationship as we continue to explore what IPs could work. For us, directionally, it certainly helps to have IP that really resonates with fans. Or in the case of, a ‘Rebel Moon,’ we were all big fans of Zack Snyder. Another thing is, we also want to look at IPs that work really well in VR. So anything that’s action-packed, anything with a very distinct, rich, colorful world, those really resonate. And, of course, something that’s very social, something people can really collaborate together on.”
While Netflix is outsourcing its VR gaming content, it is continuing to build up its own catalog of mobile games on offer through the streamer’s app, including an upcoming title based on “Rebel Moon.” Most recently, Netflix released “Squid Game: Unleashed” to coincide with the second season of its hit South Korean drama.
