Rajeev Shukla to become new BCCI President after Roger Binny hits 70-year cap
As approved by the Supreme Court of India, there is an age cap of 70 years for BCCI office bearers.
Vice-President of the BCCI, Rajeev Shukla, is poised to take over as the interim President of the board when current chief Roger Binny turns 70 on July 19. Having served as the former chairman of the Indian Premier League (IPL), a political leader, and a former journalist, Shukla is a well-known figure within the cricketing community. Roger, meanwhile, is a former Indian cricketer and played a huge role in the country’s first-ever ICC World Cup win in 1983.
Rajeev Shukla, new BCCI President?
Sources within the BCCI have told CricBlogger about this development. The transition is in line with the BCCI’s age-cap regulation, which mandates all office-bearers to relinquish their positions upon turning 70.
Discussions are already underway among senior board officials, and Shukla, who has been a central figure in Indian cricket administration for decades, is seen as the natural successor. “(Rajeev) Shukla could be replacing (Roger) Binny in July itself. The board officials are already discussing his name,” a senior BCCI official confirmed to CricBlogger.
According to the BCCI’s constitution, any office-bearer — including the president — must vacate their position after reaching the age of 70. Roger Binny, who took charge as BCCI president in October 2022 following the end of Sourav Ganguly’s term, will be ineligible to continue beyond July 19.
In such cases, the senior-most vice president takes over as interim president until the board holds new elections. Shukla, who assumed office as vice president on December 24, 2020, fits that criteria and has remained an influential voice in board matters. “Shukla, who currently serves as BCCI vice-president, is a veteran cricket administrator and seasoned politician with prior experience as chairman of IPL,” the source added.
The official announcement is expected closer to Binny’s birthday (19 July), but if all goes according to plan, Shukla will be at the helm of BCCI affairs this July, at least in an interim capacity.
