Princess Cruises passenger dies after attempting to jump off ship

Cruise ship deaths are actually very rare,

Sadly, many of those deaths are suicides.

A study in the International Journal of Travel Medicine and Global Health examined cruise ship deaths between 2000 and 2019.

There were 623 reported deaths. Out of all deaths, 89% were passenger deaths, and 11% were crew deaths. United States residents accounted for 61% of passenger deaths and crew from India (18%) and the Philippines (17%) recorded the highest crew deaths,” according to the report.

The ways people die on a cruise ship are somewhat varied.

“Falls overboard or onto lower decks (23%), suicide, murder, and a terror attack (19%), unspecified natural causes (18%), and cardiac incidents (16%) were the primary causes of passenger deaths. Suicide and murder (29%) and falls overboard or from height (24%) were the primary cause of crew member deaths,” it added,

In a broad sense, the number of deaths tracked to the size of the cruise line.

“The most passenger deaths occurred on Carnival Cruise Lines (29%), Royal Caribbean Cruises (12%), and Norwegian Cruise Line (10%). The highest crew member deaths occurred on Carnival Cruise Line (19%) and Royal Caribbean Cruises (19%),” according to the report.

On Dec. 23, a Princess Cruises passenger was not able to be saved after what may have been a suicide attempt. Doug Parker from Cruise News Today had the full story.

Transcript:

This is Cruise News Today with Doug Parker. Good morning.

Here’s your cruise news for Monday, December 23.

A passenger aboard Princess Cruises, Sky Princess, tragically passed away over the weekend while the ship was returning to Port Everglades, Florida.

In a statement, the line told Cruise News Today Princess Cruises is deeply saddened to confirm the passing of a 48-year-old American female guest who attempted to jump overboard. That guest eventually landed on a lower deck of the ship.

Crew members and the ship’s medical team responded immediately to Deck 7 starboard where they were unable to revive her.

The captain later addressed the incident over the ship’s PA and offered counseling to anyone who may need it. Princess Cruises is cooperating with local and federal authorities as they investigate.

At the time of the incident, the ship was sailing between Florida and Cuba.

Carnival Corp. optimistic about 2025

And Carnival Corporation is optimistic about 2025 after reporting a record-breaking $25 billion in revenue for 2024. CEO Josh Weinstein says that the outlook for 25 is promising, with bookings already at an all-time high in both pricing and occupancy.

He also added that nearly two-thirds of next year’s cruises are already booked.

Carnival also addressed the potential Mexico tax hurdles during a recent earnings call, saying that they are in discussions with Mexican officials and that the itineraries could be adjusted if necessary to avoid that added $42 tax.

And speaking of cruise taxes, cruise guests visiting St. Thomas will see higher fees in 2025 to fund port dredging projects.

Now, the Virgin Islands Port Authority approved the increase this past fall. The largest fee hike will be $3 per person. This is increasing from $6.84 to $9.84. That’ll start April 1.

This new fee will help fund the $17 million Harbor dredging project, allowing for larger cruise ships to dock. Two smaller warpage fees also added 44 cents for passengers docking in Haven site. That starts January 1st and April 1st at Crown Bay in St. John.
