Phillipa Soo & Josh Gad Join Hollywood Bowl’s ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’

UPDATE: Phillipa Soo (Hamilton, Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends) will take the role of Mary Magdalene in next month’s Jesus Chris Superstar at the Hollywood Bowl, and Josh Gad (Frozen, The Book of Mormon) has been cast as King Herod.
PREVIOUS, July 11: Milo Manheim and Raúl Esparza have joined the cast of next month’s Hollywood Bowl production of Jesus Christ Superstar starring the previously announced Cynthia Erivo and Adam Lambert.
Manheim will play the role of Peter and Esparza will play Pontius Pilate. Erivo is playing Jesus and Lambert is Judas. Additional casting will be announced. Sergio Trujillo directs.
The Andrew Lloyd Webber-Tim Rice musical will be performed on Friday, August 1, at 8 p.m.; Saturday, August 2, at 8 p.m.; and Sunday, August 3, at 7:30 p.m.
Manheim currently stars as Wally Clark in Paramount+’s YA drama series School Spirits, which released its second season earlier this year. He is perhaps best known for his starring role as Zed in Disney’s Zombies movie musical franchise, with the fourth installment, Zombies 4: Dawn of Vampires, premiering this month. On stage, he recently appeared as Seymour in the Off Broadway production of Little Shop of Horrors, and in Los Angeles he starred in the Deaf West stage production of Green Day’s American Idiot at the Mark Taper Forum.
Esparza’s many stage credits include Tony-nominated performances in Broadway’s Taboo (2005), Company (2007) The Homecoming (2008), and Speed-the-Plow (2009). Other theater credits include Merrily We Roll Along, Sunday in the Park with George, Assassins and Evita.
On TV, Esparza can currently be seen in Hulu’s limited series Candy, and he is perhaps best known for his long-running role of Rafael Barba in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Film credits include Sean Durkin’s Martha Marcy May Marlene, Jonathan Ullman’s Trouble in the Heights, Wes Craven’s My Soul to Take and Sidney Lumet’s Find Me Guilty.
