PBKS replace PBKS! Marcus Stoinis succeeds Glenn Maxwell as captain in BBL

While Marcus Stoinis was signed for Rs 11 crore, it took just Rs 4.2 crore for PBKS to get Glenn Maxwell.

It looks like the Punjab Kings (PBKS) have a plethora of captaincy options going into the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. At the IPL 2025 mega auction, they entered with the biggest purse ever (Rs 110.50 cr) and splashed a major chunk of it over Shreyas Iyer, who was signed for Rs 26.75 crore. While he might be a straightforward captaincy choice for PBKS, there are other options. In fact, two newly recruited players by PBKS have switched captaincy roles in another league, the Big Bish League (BBL). Yes, we are talking about Marcus Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell.

Melbourne Stars replace skipper Maxwell with Stoinis

The Melbourne Stars have appointed Marcus Stoinis as their new captain, hoping the World Cup-winning all-rounder can guide the franchise to their first final appearance in four seasons.

Stoinis, who has been a cornerstone of the Stars lineup for a decade, takes over from Glenn Maxwell, who stepped down after a disappointing 2023-24 campaign. The 35-year-old player got a brief taste of leadership last season when Maxwell was sidelined due to injury.

“I had a little bit of a taste of captaining the side in Maxi’s absence last year and loved the opportunity,” Stoinis said. “The Stars have been such a constant in my life every summer for the last 10 years, and I truly believe with the group we have assembled this season, both on and off the field, we can bring some long overdue success to the club.”

Talking about captaincy, Maxwell led the side across 65 matches, taking the Stars towards 34 victories and 30 losses. Meanwhile, Stoinis’ only game in charge saw him lose. The new edition of the BBL starts on December 15, with Perth Scorchers hosting Melbourne Stars in the opening clash.
