Top Canadian decathlete will not compete in Paris Olympics

One of Canada’s top medal contenders will not be going to Paris.

Reigning world decathlon champion Pierce LePage will not compete for Canada at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris because of a back injury.

He broke the news on his personal Instagram account and said he suffered a herniated disc in April and could not recover in time for the Summer Games that begin on July 26.

LePage, from Whitby, Ont., did not compete at the Canadian Olympic trials at the end of June because of a medical exemption.

LePage was considered a strong contender for the podium at the Paris Olympics alongside fellow Canadian Damian Warner.

The 28-year-old LePage won gold at last year’s world championships and silver the year before.

Warner won gold at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and silver at last year’s worlds.
