Can We Take A Moment To Appreciate Tamara Tunie’s Many Talents?
I was ridiculously excited when Tamara Tunie appeared on Law & Order: Organized Crime Season 5 Episode 5.
I’ve always loved her as Dr. Warner and been a fan generally, but after getting used to Tunie as Beyond The Gates’ Anita Dupree, it was doubly fun for her to pick up her well-known role from Law & Order: SVU.
I had a new appreciation for Tamara Tunie’s many talents afterward. The roles couldn’t be more different, and she is equally natural in both.
There’s a Reason Tamara Tunie’s Melinda Warner Is One Of Law & Order: SVU’s Most Beloved Characters
It’s not hard to realize how talented actress Tunie is when you realize that one of her most famous roles is as a medical examiner — and fans are always eager for her to return.
Medical examiners are often throwaway roles on the Law & Order franchise.
These characters have one or two scenes and don’t usually appear in every episode. Most of the time, their main function is to provide exposition about the victim’s death.
Tunie’s Melinda Warner was the second medical examiner to appear on Law & Order: SVU, but she became so popular that she was part of the main cast from Season 7 to Season 13.
After she dropped back to recurring and then disappeared, fans constantly hoped she’d come back, which is an even bigger testimony to Tunie’s talent.

Beyond The Gates’ Anita Dupree Is A Very Different Type of Character Than Melinda Warner
Warner is a woman of science (something which is all too rare on TV!) who balances her cold, rational explanation of what happened to murder victims with empathy.
Her support of Stabler during her cameo appearance on Law & Order: Organized Crime Season 5 Episode 5 was unsurprising because of their long friendship.
However, Warner’s soft and steady presence demonstrated Tamara Tunie’s many talents even more strongly because it is such a different role from her part on Beyond The Gates.
On the CBS soap, Tunie plays Anita Dupree, the family matriarch who is equal parts soft and loving and tough and fierce.

Anita is a former singer who fell in love with her fellow civil rights activist, Vernon Dupree, and settled down and had a family with him.
Her backstory allows her to sing, play the piano, and even perform rap — talents that Tamara Tunie fans from her SVU days might not have even been aware she possessed.
Anita is the head of the household and the one who stands up to those who need to be put in their place.
This role gives Tunie plenty of meaty material as the character struggles to keep secrets buried, encourages her daughters and granddaughters, and resists singing karaoke out of fear that she’s no longer good enough.
She can be fiery when she needs to be.

Her angry demand, “You call yourself a child of mine?” after her daughter, Dani, pulled out a gun at a wedding, was so strong and clear that it had some viewers speculating online that it would turn out Dani wasn’t hers biologically.
In some ways, it’s hard to compare these roles.
Tamara Delivers Even With Smaller Roles
Warner is a small, recurring role at this point, while Anita is one of the central roles on Beyond The Gates, appearing almost every day.
Still, putting these roles side by side make it clear that Tamara Tunie’s many talents ought to be celebrated more than they are.

Tunie has played many roles over the years. She began as a soap star on As The World Turns and, in addition to Law & Order: SVU, appeared regularly on Blue Bloods Season 8.
It’s especially impressive that Tunie has these two major roles under her belt in 2025 when you consider that Hollywood is not always welcoming to actresses over 60, especially Black actresses.
