Mike Myers Made a ‘Hugely Insulting’ Joke About His ‘Wayne’s World’ Co-Star

Watching Wayne’s World is a whole lot of fun — making it, on the other hand, wasn’t always party time.

Much has been said about Mike Myers’ fraught relationship with director Penelope Spheeris, specifically the notes Myers provided after filming wrapped. According to Spheeris, she refused to cut certain scenes in which characters other than Wayne got big laughs, and lost out on the chance to direct Wayne’s World 2 as a result.

Well, now it turns out that Myers also jokingly ridiculed one of his co-stars while screening footage for the cast and crew. While that may not be quite as dramatic as feuding with the director, it’s still kind of a dick move.

Fans of the movie will remember that Kurt Fuller played the part of Russell, the dorky producer and sidekick to the villainous yuppie Benjamin (played by Rob Lowe). By the end of the movie, Russell turns on his boss and helps Garth and his buddies regain control of their show.

Fuller recently guested on Wrestling Life with Ben Veal. That’s because, although he isn’t a wrestler, Fuller did have a prominent role in the 1989 Hulk Hogan vehicle No Holds Barred.

Fuller said that when he went to work on Wayne’s World, Dana Carvey razzed him about the Vince McMahon-produced film. “Hey, how’s Hulk Hogan, tell the Hulkster I said ‘Hi,’” the future Master of Disguise star joked. “I go, ‘Jesus Christ, how did he find out about No Holds Barred? I don’t tell anybody!’” Fuller recalled.

Slightly more embarrassing was the time that Myers dunked on the actor while the cast and crew were reviewing the previous day’s footage. “So we’re watching the dailies and there’s a shot of me and Rob Lowe in a two-shot, and Rob Lowe — at that time, you couldn’t find a more obnoxiously handsome person,” Fuller explained. “And in the back, I think it was Mike Myers, went ‘I AM NOT AN ANIMAL!’”

The line was obviously a reference to John Merrick’s plea for basic human decency in the movie version of The Elephant Man, the implication being that Fuller looked like a famously deformed 19th century Englishman while standing next to Lowe.

Fortunately, Fuller found the joke amusing. “I thought, ‘You know what? This is one of the funniest things that ever happened to me, even though it’s hugely insulting,’” he noted. “That’s the kind of stuff I remember from Wayne’s World.”

Well, at least he didn’t get debilitating neck pains like the actors who performed the “Bohemian Rhapsody” scene.
