EXCLUSIVE: Max has taken in for development Your Second Wife, a soapy, erotic thriller series based on Laura Van Den Berg’s short story of the same name, from Your Friends & Neighbors writer-exec producer Jamie Rosengard, Crazy Rich Asians co-writer Adele Lim, Michael Sugar’s Sugar23 and Jessica Rothe‘s (Happy Death Day) Lil’ Situation Productions.
Created by Rosengard, who also serves as showrunner and executive producer, Your Second Wife follows Liana Dunn, an aspiring actress turned high school theater teacher trapped in stasis on Long Island. Struggling to move on from the death of her sister, Liana cultivates an unconventional double life that proves too intoxicating for her to give up… even when it places her life in imminent danger.
Rothe discovered the short story and brought it to Sugar23 with the idea of developing it for television.
Michael Sugar, Ashley Zalta and Margaux Swerdloff executive produce for Sugar23. The project is produced by Sugar23, Lim and Naia Cucukov’s 100 Tigers and Rothe’s Lil’ Situation Productions.
Rosengard is currently a writer and executive producer for Jonathan Tropper’s highly anticipated Apple series Your Friends & Neighbors, starring Jon Hamm. It’s set for premiere April 11 and has already been picked up for a second season. She most recently developed the limited series Take Me Apart, adapted from the novel by Sara Sligar, for Amazon, Merman, and Scrap Paper Pictures, as well as projects for Netflix and Freeform.
Lim co-wrote the 2018 screenplay for Crazy Rich Asians, which grossed $239 million worldwide, and won the Critics Choice Award for Best Comedy, along with numerous other nominations,. She is currently developing a TV series based on the film for Warner Bros. Television and Max. She’s also developing and attached to direct The Princess Diaries 3 for Disney, with Anne Hathaway reprising her role. Her TV credits include EP and showrunner for The CW’s Star-Crossed and co-EP on Private Practice, Reign and Lethal Weapon. Lim and Cucukov’s 100 Tigers has several projects in development at Amazon/MGM Studios, Max and ABC, among others.
