‘MasterChef Sri Lanka’ Baking At Free TV Network

Calling Sri Lanka’s best amateur cooks: Time to get you recipe books out. A local version of MasterChef is in the works at Sri Lankan free-to-air network ITN, and will debut in September as a 25-episode season. Reality TV Production will make the show in association with Nilenda Deshapriya Productions. The Banijay Entertainment format as been remade 70 times before, ranking MasterChef among the most globally-popular formats. It sees amateur cooks have their food judged by a team of professional chefs and critics, with one eventually crowned the MasterChef. “This globally celebrated culinary format will see aspiring chefs showcase their talent, passion, and creativity, marking a new chapter in Sri Lankan television history. We look forward to delivering the MasterChef experience with the quality and excellence our viewers expect.” In related Banijay news, the company’s branded entertainment division, BBE, has formed a strategic alliance with brand production services company And So Productions.

Trailer For Indie Pic ‘Lolita‘ Drops

EXCLUSIVE: Above is the trailer for Jorge Xolalpa’s low-budget indie pic Lolita, which is premiering at the San Antonio Film Festival this summer. Set in the working-class outskirts of L.A., Lolita follows Jesús (Alexis Vazquez), an openly gay man recently released from prison after serving a nine-year sentence for a nonviolent drug offense, who is determined to reclaim his life and reunite with his daughter. Vazquez stars in his acting debut alongside Johnny Ortiz (McFarland, USA), Plutarco Haza (El Señor de los Cielos), Katherine Castro (Someday), and Academy Award nominee Eric Roberts (Runaway TrainThe Dark Knight). Lolita is written, directed and produced by Xolalpa under his Mighty Aphrodite Pictures banner, with Alfredo Widman serving as producer for Latin Entertainment Work. Rafael Loza, Victoria Del Rosal and Nelson Saenz are the exec producers.

BFI Awards $2.3M For Co-Pros Through UK Global Screen Fund

The BFI has allocated £1.65M ($2.27M) to back 11 international co-productions that UK companies are making with overseas counterparts. The cash will come through the BFI’s UK Global Screen Fund and is financed through the UK government’s Department for Culture Media and Sport. The projects range from animated kids’ series Captain Onion’s Buoyant Academy for Wayward Youth, a co-pro between Northern Ireland’s ALT Animation, Scotland’s Wild Child Animation and Ireland’s Studio Meala, through to Rabbit Hayes, a UK minority co-pro feature film based on Anna McPartlin’s ‘The Last Days of Rabbit Hayes’ that brings Forty Foot Pictures together with Ireland’s Feline Films and the Netherlands’ Bind Film. Scotch Verdict (working title) is from Scotland’s Sylph Productions, Germany’s Heimatfilm and Switzerland’s Dschoint Ventschr Filmproduktion. Directed by Sophie Heldman, it is based on the true story of two women who  founded a girls’ school in Edinburgh in 1810 and found themselves accused of having a romantic relationship. “This latest round of awards showcases the UK’s truly unique creative talent, with an extraordinary range of projects spanning film and television across documentary, animation and fiction, reaching 57 international co-productions with 34 territories supported by the fund to date,” said Denitsa Yordanova, Head of UK Global Screen Fund and International Funds.
