Lucy Hale Reveals Auditioning For Lead Role In ‘Hannah Montana’

Lucy Hale may be best known as the de-facto leader in Pretty Little Liars, but in an alternate reality she might have been enmeshed in a double life as the protagonist in Disney‘s Hannah Montana. The actress said the auditioning process for the role, which eventually went to Miley Cyrus, solidified her desire to be in the entertainment industry.
In a recent installment of BuzzFeed’s The Puppy Interview, Hale revealed a series of roles she auditioned for that may be surprising for viewers, including Pitch Perfect, Hairspray, Hannah Montana, 50 Shades of Grey and The Substance.
“Oh my gosh, so many,” she said. “I feel like, because I’ve lived in L.A. almost 20 years, everyone who gets the role is always, it’s meant to be their thing, but for every ‘yes’ to an audition, there’s like a lineup of 200 that you heard a ‘no’ for, so I should probably go back like in journals and look at all the things I’ve auditioned for.”
When asked which role she tried for in the popular children’s sitcom, which ran from 2006 to 2011 and solidified Cyrus as a teen star, Hale confirmed it was for the lead, adding that she was 14 and still living in her home state of Tennessee at the time.
“It was a couple years before they had cast Miley in it,” she explained. “I remember the audition. It was a taped audition in Tennessee. It was the audition that made me want to be an actress. I remember that vividly, it was very cool.”
Later on in the interview, the F*** Marry Kill star touched on her first acting job in another children’s sitcom staple: as one of Drake’s dates in Nickelodeon’s Drake and Josh at the age of 15.
“I was very nervous. In the scene, Drake [Bell]’s character, he’s like, ‘What’s your name?’ And I go, ‘Hazel!’ And he goes, ‘Like the nut?’ And I go, ‘uh-huh!’ And that’s it. Groundbreaking. My career skyrocketed since then, so, it’s all because of that,” she joked.
