Louverture Films Boards Audio Series ‘Black Caesar’s Revenge’

Indie outfit Louverture Films (Nickel Boys) has boarded the forthcoming audio series Black Caesar’s Revenge.

Joslyn Barnes of Louverture joins Jean A. Fall of the French-based Cinewax Films and Elora Cadasse, CEO of the Martinique-based United States of the Caribbean, on the project.

Black Caesar’s Revenge centers on a group of unheralded pirates of the 18th Century, men and women of African descent who were forced to take to the high seas in search of freedom after their abduction from an African civilization at its zenith, a thriving culture of skilled craftspeople and booming trade.

The official synopsis reads: At the heart of this thrilling adventure story is the charismatic Black Caesar, hailing from the Oyo Kingdom (now Nigeria) and gradually bestowed with devastating (and bedeviling) powers from the deities known as Orishas. He and his closest comrades must learn how to navigate both perilous seas and the spirit realm of the ancestors, as they contend with the ruthless marauders who trade human lives for profit, slave masters who run their plantations with brutal authority, legendary pirates who terrorize the Caribbean sea in search of fortunes, and traitors from within the Oyo and neighboring kingdoms.

The project is led by a cohort of creatives from Africa and the Caribbean. The group includes South African showrunner and writer Amy Jephta (Catch Me a Killer), the creator and writer known as Saber, and writer-director Kensley James (Strictly Confidential), in association with composers from Force de Frappe édition. Production will begin in the Fall.

Co-founded in 2005 by actor Danny Glover and writer-producer Barnes, Louverture Films works across independent film, series, and interactive projects as well as artworks. To date, the company has produced or co-produced over 60 feature and documentary films, series, and artworks shot in 26 countries. The company was named after Toussaint Louverture, the leader of the Haitian Revolution.
