Tennessee State University to launch NCAA men’s hockey program in 2026-27

The first historically Black college or university to have an NCAA Division I men’s hockey program will begin play in 2026-27.

Tennessee State University announced its decision to delay the team’s launch by a year on Thursday.

The school said the decision was made in collaboration with the NHL, the Nashville Predators and College Hockey Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting Division I hockey to prospective players and fans.

The NHL/NHLPA Industry Growth fund will provide a $250,000 grant to help the program, along with continued support from the Predators.

“Working closely with the NHL and the Predators, we agree that an additional year will provide the program with the time and resources it needs to launch at full strength and with long-term financial success in mind,” said Tennessee State interim president Dwayne Tucker.
