Keanu Reeves spins out during pro racing debut in Indianapolis

Keanu Reeves is putting his experience with Speed to good use.

The Matrix star made his professional auto racing debut at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Saturday, competing in the Toyota GR Cup. Though he sped all the way to the 21st position at one point in the race, he ultimately finished 25th out of 35 racers.

Reeves did not have the easiest time on the track: The Constantine actor spun into the grass a little over halfway through the 45-minute race at the Turn 9 exit, the Associated Press reports. The mishap came without a collision, however.

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway shared a video of Reeves hitting the track the day before the race. He drove a red car that bore No. 92 and an endorsement from Boom! Studios, the comic book company that publishes his series BRZRKR. Reeves was also endorsed by tire manufacturer Continental — which perhaps only coincidentally shares the name of the iconic assassins-only hotel in Reeves’ John Wick series.

This isn’t Reeves’ first time on a racetrack — he previously competed in (and won!) a celebrity race at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach in 2009.

Despite being one of his generation’s defining movie stars, Reeves has undertaken so many exploits outside film that he might not even list acting among his favorite activities. In addition to helping create and oversee the aforementioned comic series, he also co-wrote a novel set in the BRZRKR world that he released earlier this year. In 2023 he resurrected his decades-old band, Dogstar, playing bass for it, and he also owns a company that creates custom motorcycles.

In another athletic endeavor, Reeves signed a one-day contract with a junior hockey team in Canada earlier this summer. The team noted that they scouted Reeves to play for them during his youth, but he ultimately opted to pursue acting over the sport — though he did eventually get “involved in a street hockey game that took place every weekend for over 10 years” when he moved to Los Angeles, per a Reddit AMA.

And although his acting career has played out almost exclusively on the big screen, Reeves has recently expanded his horizons to high-profile projects elsewhere. He voiced and provided his likeness for a key character in the video game Cyberpunk 2077, and he’s set to co-headline an upcoming Broadway production of Waiting for Godot with his Bill & Ted costar Alex Winter.
