That’s the sign — it’s time to start spitting.
This morning, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced the nominations for this year’s 77th Primetime Emmy Awards, and the list of creatives and shows in line for TV’s highest honor heavily featured all the usual suspects. Perennial awards darling The Bear once again showed out in the comedy categories, with 13 nominations, beating out the number of laugh-out-loud moments its had through four seasons and counting. But, thankfully, Hacks, a funny series that includes jokes and laughter, led the pack out of all comedy shows and “comedy shows” this year, earning 14 nods for its stellar fourth season — just none for the most underappreciated guest star on HBO.
Despite delivering one of the most stirring monologues in Hacks history, superstar Kaitlin Olson didn’t receive a nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy series or Best Guest Actress in a Comedy Series, nor is she in the running for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her work on the massively successful crime drama High Potential.
Don’t Miss
At this year’s Emmy Awards, the voters should be the ones subjected to an embarrassing play-off serenade as they’re ushered offstage — and I know just the song to send them packing.
Seriously, between the pack-leading commercial success of High Potential, the critical acclaim of Hacks and the return of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, 2025 is shaping up to be the year that Olson took over television, and the most important awards show in the industry completely whiffed on so much as an “honorable mention” while stacking every comedy category with multiple obligatory entries from The Bear while skipping High Potential entirely in the drama department.
Olson is one of the biggest stars in television at the moment, and, for some shitty reason, whether it’s a snobbish disdain for police procedurals like High Potential or leftover acrimony toward Always Sunny after 16 straight seasons of nose-thumbing, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences is letting their personal bad taste cloud their judgement as they continue to miss the opportunity to commemorate one of the medium’s greatest-ever artists.
Of course, the last 20 years of Always Sunny snubs have taught Olson’s loyal fanbase that snooty awards organizations devalue themselves when they fail to recognize and honor greatness rather than devaluing the artists themselves, but in an industry that’s all about heat, having the words “Emmy-winner” before Olson’s name could have opened the door for even more high-profile opportunities for the funniest woman on television.
Maybe Olson should just bite the bullet and go spend a season at Suds — women don’t have to be funny over there to win awards. Hell, she could even go work at The Bear!
