Jesse Tyler Ferguson Joins His TV Daughter in Recreating That Iconic ‘Modern Family’ Bit

In real life, Aubrey Frances Anderson-Emmons is not, in fact, Vietnamese – but she is part gay, and her fake father couldn’t be prouder.

A couple weeks ago, Anderson-Emmons, who played Lily Tucker-Pritchett on the lauded ABC sitcom Modern Family for most of her childhood, came out as bisexual in a mega-viral TikTok post where she used the popular audio from one of her most iconic scenes to give it new meaning for Pride Month. Fans of the actress and pop-folk singer flooded into the comment section to praise Anderson-Emmons for her creative closet-exit and to postulate that, if her fictional TV fathers Cameron and Mitchell could see her now, they’d be so overwhelmingly proud of their adopted daughter and her identity.

Well, earlier this week, Anderson-Emmons met up with her old co-star and father figure Jesse Tyler Ferguson to prove that theory correct, as the Modern Family cast mates added a new layer to the meme while Anderson-Emmons mocked her dad’s painfully Millennial tendencies:

In the original Modern Family scene, the Season 4 classic “The Future Dunphys,” Cam and Mitchell take Lily to a Vietnamese restaurant in order to help her connect with her cultural heritage, only to find that Lily prefers cheeseburgers to phở and thinks that the gay identity can be inherited. Well, twelve years later, Lily wasn’t completely wrong about that last part.

Anderson-Emmons ran into Ferguson at the National Theatre in London, where Ferguson is currently performing in a revival of the Stephen Sondheim musical Here We Are. Ferguson, who is, himself, an out-and-proud gay man, also commemorated the reunion on his own social media account, as he posted a selfie with Anderson-Emmons on Instagram with the caption, “had some fam at the show last night. Final 3 shows this weekend! *hearts emoji* love you, Aubrey *hand hearts emoji*”

All that’s missing to truly make the twelve-year-old meme complete is for Eric Stonestreet and Sofia Vergara to join their former co-stars for a full recreation, but that doesn’t seem all that likely – Anderson-Emmons captioned her most recent viral post with the disclaimer, “my time using this audio is officially over after this.”

That’ll free up plenty of time for her to work on recreating some other iconic Modern Family moments – there are plenty of TikTokers out there who need her to call them a wambulance.
