‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ Fan Mocks ‘Rob Mac’ News With Fake Article About Charlie Day’s Rebrand

Rob Mac believes that his old surname was too confusing for his international fans, and yet, Charlie is the one who is still fighting to convince some It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia viewers that his name is Day, man!

Against the urging of his family and fans, the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star and creator previously known as Robert Dale McElhenney III has begun the process of legally changing his name to simply “Rob Mac.” Almost two decades after Always Sunny first premiered and put Mac on the path toward international entertainment mogul status, he believes that his former last name (and the name shared by his wife and kids) was too difficult for prospective fans in Latin America to pronounce as he and Ryan Reynolds plan to add a Mexican soccer team to their global sports portfolio.

Long-time It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia fans have reacted to Mac’s rename with exactly as much disdain and mockery as the Paddy’s Pub Gang would have if one of their own ever attempted such a switch. However, for my money, the best fan reaction to the Rob Mac rebrand came from comedy and entertainment writer Bush Bill who recently posted an article on his substack Hollywood Time$ titled, “Charlie Day Files to Legally Change Name to Charlie Kelly.”

“From a bush nowhere near Philadelphia, I can now confirm that Charlie Day has filed the paperwork to officially change his name to Charlie Kelly,” writes Bill. “The change comes after two decades of people getting his last name wrong, thanks in part to his character, Charlie Kelly.”

As Bill reports, the switch comes hot on the heels of Rob Mac’s own rebrand but not a moment too soon for Day, who has spent the last two decades correcting confused fans about his IRL identity. “When we were creating the show, I had concerns about my character being named Charlie,” Kelly supposedly told Bill. “I told Glenn and Rob that it could confuse people. They told me there was nothing to worry about and that I was being a total spaz. Well, here we are now. Twenty years later, and even my own family is calling me Charlie Kelly. So, why fight it? You want Charlie Kelly? I’ll give you Charlie Kelly. I’ll give you Charlie Kelly 24/7.”

Although Day/Kelly worked himself into a lather over the ongoing name mix-up, thankfully, his better half was there to calm him down. “The actress who plays The Waitress, who it turns out is married to Kelly in real life, arrived on set to rub his belly,” Bill writes. “At press time this reporter discovered The Waitress’ real name is Mary Elizabeth Ellis. The bush I hid in for this story was a Russian Sage.”

Somehow, Kelly changing his name to match his most famous character is still more understandable than his old friend and castmate shortening the perfectly acceptable moniker Rob McElhenney into the kind of stage name that an amateur wrestler would take on before spray painting fake abs on himself and getting his ass kicked by a homeless guy.

Thankfully, Glenn Howerton and Kaitlin Olson will never have to deal with the headache of changing their names for professional reasons — The G.L.E.N.N. System simply doesn’t roll off the tongue.
