Is This ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ Vanity Card Teasing the End of the Series?

A secret message hidden after the credits of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 17 could be a warning to the fans that the end is nigh – or maybe Brian LeFevre just found out that he has another kid in North Dakota.
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is already the longest running live-action sitcom in American TV history, so, twenty minutes into the run, us fans who are still tuning in every week should just count ourselves lucky that FX keeps renewing the show’s contract, and that Danny DeVito is still kicking despite the confectionary trickery of the most recent episode. With Season 17 underway, we only have a few more weeks until another dreaded hiatus drags out the fandom’s discussions about when the Paddy’s Pub Gang will call it quits.
FX has already extended It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia through Season 18, so we know that this year will not be the last one when Mac, Charlie, Dennis, Dee and Frank grace our TV screens. However, one observant Always Sunny fan noticed that, when they played the audio track from the vanity card for RCG productions following both episodes of last night’s Season 17 premiere backwards, it contained a secret message:
Don’t Miss
In the reversed track, we can hear Howerton groaning, “I don’t want to do this anymore, I want someone else to do it.”

In every season of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Howerton, Charlie Day and Rob Mac sneak a backwards recording into the vanity card for their company RCG Productions, but this year’s message is significantly more foreboding than past entries.
Critically, Howerton has long been open about the fact that he has felt the strongest pull to end his involvement in the show and carry on with his career sans Sunny. While Howerton, Day and Mac all admitted that, every time they go through the writing stage of a new season, each of them feels like blowing it all up and moving on with their lives, Howerton has clearly come the closest to saying goodbye to both the series and his co-stars, just as Dennis did back in the Season 12 finale “Dennis’ Double Life.”
Perhaps Howerton was making fun of his own past attempts to break free from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia with the new vanity card track. Maybe he was simply tired of being the secret message recorder and wants one of his co-stars to take over. But, considering that this is the first vanity card recording in seven seasons (and only the third one ever) that didn’t include the Gang’s running joke of shouting something about “brown,” this grumbling, depressed message feels too off-tone to be insignificant.
But, hey, if Howerton and the rest of RCG decides to stick it out another year, I’m sure the fans could scrounge up a special surprise to make it worth their while – I hear they like RPG launchers.
