Manager John Schneider said Monday the outfielder remains weeks away from swinging a bat as he continues to recover from a shoulder injury.
The 30-year-old Santander sustained a left shoulder subluxation after crashing into the wall during a game against the Los Angeles Angels in May. Through 50 games this season, he’s batting .179 with a .577 OPS and six home runs.
Santander represented the Blue Jays’ top off-season addition, signing a five-year, $92.5 million contract to bring power to Toronto’s lineup.
Instead, he struggled while healthy and is now a question mark moving forward.
Schneider added he is hopeful that Santander can return during this season.
The Blue Jays begin a pivotal series against the New York Yankees on Monday. Live coverage will be available on Sportsnet and Sportsnet+ beginning at 6:30 p.m. ET / 3:30 p.m. PT.
